The Mansfield Sustainable Flood Resilience Scheme

Severn Trent Water invested £76 million in Mansfield on a range of nature-based solutions to protect communities from flooding. Working alongside Mansfield District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council, this is the largest project of its kind ever to be attempted in the country.

The finished scheme will be able to store over 30 million litres of surface water, that’s about 14 Olympic-sized swimming pools. In real terms this means reduced flood risk for 90,000 people and the creation of 390 jobs locally, too.

Severn Trent Water believe this will become a blueprint for how we manage flooding in the future. And at the same time, it makes Mansfield an even fresher, greener place to live for the residents and communities.

Combined Flow Control
& Non-Return Valve Chamber - WASP07202

SEL were contacted by Severn Trent Water (STW) who wanted to discuss orifice flow control chambers to regulate flows from their rain gardens, which were retrofitted as part of the Mansfield Sustainable Flood Resilience Scheme to improve flood resilience through use of sustainable drainage techniques.

The rain gardens would connect to a combined sewer network so a non-return valve would also be required to prevent backflow, STW expressed a preference to use a Wastop NRV.

Normally this would mean two separate drainage chambers would be required but due to serious space limitations and a need to maximise attenuation within the rain gardens, STW asked if it was possible to combine them both into a single chamber. STW also wanted the orifice flow control and Wastop non-return valve to be removable for maintenance.

Fit for Purpose

SEL developed a prototype drainage chamber that combined a removable orifice flow control and a removable wastop non-return valve. The yellow highlights in the image show the removable elements.

The prototype drainage chamber was put through a rigorous testing process at Sheffield University to ensure it was fit for purpose. 18 orifice flow control profiles were tested and the Wastop performance was checked to ensure an optimal arrangement causing minimal effect on the flow control performance. The removable plates were also tested to see how effective their seals were.

The final design, successfully installed in 100+ locations, provided a compact chamber, easily handled on site with:

  • Integral shutter for a concrete surround

  • Small footprint

  • Sealing removable plates

  • Predictable flow rate performance

  • Removable and maintainable non-return valve

  • Futureproof, as orifice flow control and Wastop valve can be easily replaced or updated
